What is the Law of Christ?

The Law of Christ was first promised in Deuteronomy 18:15-19. Christ was to be a prophet Who, like Moses, would be a lawgiver. The Law of Christ is found in the New Covenant, which God had promised to make with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah because they had broken the Old Covenant (Jer 31:31-32). Just as Moses had handed down Godís commandments in the Old Covenant Law, Jesus Christ has handed down Godís commandments for the New Covenant Law.

When did Christ give His Law?

Christ gave His Law on the side of the mountain in Galilee after He had named the twelve apostles. Great multitudes were then following Him from Galilee, Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and from the other side of the Jordan River. The discourse in which Christ gave His New Covenant Law is commonly called ďThe Sermon on the MountĒ (Mt 5-7).

Who is under the Law of Christ?

In Galatians, Paul admonishes the Gentile believers to fulfill the Law of Christ (Gal 6:2). The New Covenant was originally promised to the Jews (Jer 31:31). At first, Jesus Christís followers and disciples were mainly Jews, and Jesus restricted their ministry ďonly to the lost sheep of the house of IsraelĒ (Mt 10:6). After Christís death, He commissioned His disciples to ďmake disciples of all nations . . . Teaching them to observe all things that I have commandedĒ (Mt 28:19-20).† Therefore, every believer who hears and accepts the Christís gospel is under the New Covenant Law.† Consequently, when Paul ministered Christís† New Covenant to the Corinthians (a church including Gentile believers), he described the Holy Spiritís change of their hearts according to the New Covenant terms which God had promised in Ezekiel (2 Cor 3:2-6; Eze 11:19-20; 36:26-27).

How does Christís Law impact me?

If you are a believer, Christ has ended the Law of Moses for all those who believe (Rom 10:4; Heb 7:12, 18-19; 8:6-7). You are now to live under the authority of the Law of Christ in obedience to His Commandments. The Holy Spirit has regenerated your heart and resides within you and empowers your obedience to God's Word, transforming you to be like Christ. Christ promises everlasting rewards to those who obey Godís will. Those believers who refuse to obey are acting foolishly and will lose the reward which God desires to give them.

Godís Will for New Testament Believers

The author has recognized that Matthewís Gospel records the New Covenant and its New Law handed down by Jesus Christ. He explains that Godís will for New Testament believers is that they obey Christís Commandments and be molded into Christlikeness. Furthermore, only obedient believers will receive all of the New Covenantís blessings.†
